In this American English pronunciation video, we're going to discuss how to pronounce the letter X.
The letter X can be pronounced 2 different ways: voiced or unvoiced. If it's voiced, it's the [gz] sound. To make the G, the back of the tongue stretches up and touches the soft palate. As it does that, the tip of the tongue stays here, behind the bottom front teeth for the Z sound, so when I release the back part of the tongue, the front part of the tongue is ready to go. ggzz. Unvoiced, it's the [ks] sound, so the position is exactly the same. Only this time, instead of making a sound with the the vocal cords, we just use air to make the sound, no vibration of the cords, kkss.
Let's look at some examples.
[ks] mix, extra, oxygen
[gz] exam, exist, exit
There is one word that I can think of that's an exception, and that is a word we borrow from French. The word is 'beaux' -- plural of 'beau'. Even though we use the French spelling for the plural, we use an American English pronunciation: beaux. So, it's a Z: beaux.
There it is, the pronunciation of the letter X.
That's it, and thanks so much for using Rachel's English.
